ALTIUS PRESCRIPTION PILOT-STYLE POLARISED SUNGLASSES
Rapid Eyewear's British-designed prescription pilot sunglasses combine strength, style, comfort and cutting edge lens technology to provide you with the ultimate sunglasses for sports and leisure use. Altius are supplied with the following options:
- Grey category 3 lenses, polarised
- Green category 3 lenses, polarised
Altius have a build quality and feature list that makes them outstanding value for money when compared to alternative high-end brands.
The Frame
Manufactured from a tough nickel-silver alloy, the top quality Altius frame is extremely robust, with sprung side arms and solid hinges that do not exhibit the slop associated with cheaper sunglasses. Adjustable nose pads and rubber side arm extensions enhance comfort levels. Finished in an attractive silver colour.
The Lenses
Utilising Rapid Eyewear's Multi Layer technology, Altius lenses are packed with features. Made from impact resistant polycarbonate, the lenses are finished with a flash mirror coating.
All of the category 3 options are for use in regular, bright sunlight.
Glare is caused by the sun's rays bouncing off horizontal surfaces, including the road, another car's windscreen etc. Polarised lenses remove glare by filtering out this horizontal light. Polarised lenses can be manufactured in one of two ways - cheaper sunglasses have filters stuck on to the front of the lens, and this does work to a large extent but for optimum performance the filters need to be built in to the lenses. Altius has this feature, providing the very best glare reduction possible.
The Altius lenses have a hard coating to make them as scratch resistant as possible. They also benefit from hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings, which resist grease and water.
By filtering blue light from the spectrum, Altius lenses improve depth perception and contrast, making it easier to judge the terrain ahead.
Prescription Options
We are pleased to offer a range of prescription options for Altius grey polarised and non polarised sunglasses only, up to a maximum SPH strength of plus or minus 4.5. The options are as follows:
To add prescription lenses, select an appropriate option from the drop-down menu at the top of this page and fill in the boxes that appear.
Please note that mirror lenses are not supplied as standard with our prescription options. Also note that the prescription lenses are not supplied with oleophobic or hydrophobic coatings. The non polarised prescription lenses will have an anti glare coating added.
From the date of order it will take around 2 - 3 weeks to complete and ship the sunglasses to you. Orders with the flash mirror coating will take a little longer than the standard options.
You can measure your own PD easily. With your regular glasses on, ask someone to hold a ruler up against your glasses and measure off, in millimetres, the distance between the centres of your pupils.

Pupillary Distance (PD)
This is the distance, in millimetres, between the pupils of your eyes, when measured across the front of your glasses. PD's typically fall in the range of 55 up to 70mm. If you choose to have us make up your prescription sunglasses, we will need to know your PD. Opticians measure PD during an eye test, but they often do not put the result on a prescription card provided to the patient. If you do not know your PD, please ask your optician what it is. Unfortunately, some opticians will not release the measurement and in the UK, they are not obliged to do so.You can measure your own PD easily. Conformity and UV
Rapid Eyewear sunglasses comply with British and European standards for sunglasses and protective equipment testing. They offer 100% UVA / UVB (UV400) protection and comply with US Z80.3.
